Are boutique hotels disappearing?
Now should be the prime time for independent hotels, according to the New York Times, but instead they are up against major hotel chains such as Accor, Marriott International and InterContinental Hotels Group as well as alternative accommodations such as Airbnb, and “more independent hotels are either joining the big chains or shutting their doors.”

According to data from STR, parent company of Hotel News Now, cited in the New York Times, about two-thirds of all hotels were independent 30 years ago. Today, less than 40% have independent ownership and management.

“One of the biggest reasons independent hotels are disappearing is that they’re getting acquired by the large hotel companies or joining them as affiliates to tap into their marketing power,” according to the newspaper.

2020 culinary and cocktail trends
Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants’ Culinary and Cocktail Trends Forecast for 2020 reveals that consumers continue to be more “educated, mindful and globally connected than ever before,” according to Scott Gingerich, Kimpton’s SVP of restaurants and bars. Kimpton polled experts across the globe to get their insights on dining habits and dietary preferences that will underpin food and beverage in 2020.

Culinary trends include: alternative diets will become more mainstream; not-so-obscure health ingredients; cross-cultural fusions; plant-based everything; Levantine cuisine; funky flavors such as sweet on sour; unusual spices; and more.

Cocktail trends include: bartenders collaborating more with chefs; spritzes and whiskey highballs will gain in popularity; sour beers and hazy or juicy IPAs; high-alcohol kombucha as a beer alternative; coffee spritzes as non-alcoholic alternatives; and more.

Openings, management, people on the move

  • The Kixby Hotel opens in Manhattan, housed in a historic Beaux-Arts building that was built in 1901.
  • Historic Hotels of America presents the 2019 Historic Hotels of America Steward of History and Historic Preservation Award to Robert H. Dedman, Jr., general partner of Putterboy and owner of Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, North Carolina.
  • The Estate Yountville appoints Sileshi Mengiste as managing director. He will oversee the 22-acre property comprised of Vintage House and Hotel Villagio as well as a newly renovated spa, restaurants and gardens.
  • Hotel Equities takes over operations of The Island Beachside Resort by Hotel RL in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.
  • The Confidante Miami Beach appoints Macarena Sepulveda as director of event planning and experiences.
  • The Hotel Concord in Concord, New Hampshire, promotes Joseph Burbach to chief concierge.
  • Tonya Scott is appointed GM of Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, Illinois.
